Ugly?
Mostly it's about the money, dirty electricity from coal, oil or nuclear power plants is cheaper to produce than electricity from sun, wind and water. Another factor is that not all types of electricity producing devices fit everywhere. For example wind turbines that needs lot of wind to be cost effective but not to hard winds that will cause them to break down.
Some people also consider house mounted solar panels to be ill-looking.
Yes and no. The power itself is free since the sunshine is free and also the wind but wind turbines and solar panels must be installed to be able to turn this energy to electricity and that hardware has some investment costs.
